Who's Shopping Online in the Arab World?
Just in time for the holiday season, OneCard has released an infographic detailing the habits of online shoppers in the Arab World.
The survey, conduct in November 2011 of over 1,000 consumers across the Middle East and North Africa, reveals that e-commerce is booming: around 46% of men and 32% of women who are online are buying products.
Interestingly, of the population that has access to the internet, it's not just kids who are buying online; it mostly those in the age range between 26 to 35 years old and those over 35+, of whom over 52-53% shop online. Whereas only 41% of 16 to 25 year olds buy online, and more of their purchases are under $100 than any other age group.
This makes sense when considering their purchases, however; the survey also finds that gaming accounts for 41% of online purchases, more than any other single category of online shopping, and 87% of gamers are under 25.
In general, users are motivated to shop online because they can find better offers, and compare products easily, but fear of using credit remains an issue. Those who don't shop online are still afraid of credit card information theft, and most of the users surveyed in Egypt and Saudi Arabia prefer prepaid cards to any other form of online payment.
So, unsurprisingly, it looks like gaming will be the buzzword of e-commerce in 2012. Check out the infographic below, or view the full-size version here:
