Careem sacks Egypt boss

Careem’s Egypt managing director Wael El Fakharany said in a tweet today that he was sacked by the car hailing startup.

Egypt newspaper Al Mal broke the news today that El Fakharany had stepped down, but the now ex-country manager and senior vice president for government relations said he'd been fired, a move he called humiliating and surprising.

El Fakharany joined the company in August 2016 from Google, during a difficult year for taxi hailing in Egypt.

“Wael Fakharany is a respected member of the tech ecosystem. He led Careem in Egypt alongside a passionate and dedicated team. We wish him the best in his future endeavors. As of March 1st, Ramy Kato has assumed the position of Head of Egypt Operations. We are excited about our mission to create jobs and provide mobility to millions of Egyptians under Ramy’s leadership,” Careem cofounder and CEO Mudassir Sheikha said in a statement.

Kato takes on the job in addition to his role as head of Careem Care. Prior to joining Careem Kato was the CEO of business process outsourcing provider Xceed.
